3.2 Hyperthermia
Prolonged immersion in hot water may induce hyperthermia (over-
hea ng). The use of alco-
hol or drugs can greatly increase the risk of fatal hyperthermia is swim spas. A descrip on of
the causes, symptoms, and effects of hyperthermia are as follows:
Hyperthermia occurs when the internal temperature of the body reaches a level several de-
grees above the normal body temperature of 98.6

C). The symptoms of hyperthermia
include drowsiness, lethargy (fa gue), and an increase in the internal temperature of the
body (feeling of being too hot). The effects of hyperthermia include:
Unawareness of impending hazard;
Failure to perceive heat;
Failure to recognize the need to exit the swim spa;
Physical inability to exit the swim spa;
Fetal damage in pregnant women; and
Unconsciousness and danger of drowning.
