The “TOW/HAUL Indicator Light” will illuminate in
the instrument cluster to indicate when the switch
has been activated. Pressing the switch a second
time restores normal operation. If the TOW/HAUL
mode is desired, the switch must be pressed each
time the engine is started.
Torque Converter Clutch
A feature designed to improve fuel economy has
been added to the automatic transmission of this
vehicle. A clutch within the torque converter en-
gages automatically at calibrated speeds. This
may result in a slightly different feeling or re-
sponse during normal operation in high gear.
When the vehicle speed drops or during accel-
eration, the clutch automatically and smoothly
disengages.
Transmission Limp Home Mode
The transmission is monitored for abnormal con-
ditions. If a condition is detected that could cause
damage, the transmission shifts automatically into
2nd gear if the vehicle speed is appropriate. If not,
it will wait until the conditions are appropriate and
then it will shift into 2nd gear. The transmission will
then remain in 2nd gear despite the forward gear
selected. PARK, REVERSE, and NEUTRAL will
continue to operate.
A reset feature allows the vehicle to be driven to
an authorized dealer for service without damaging
the transmission. To reset the transmission, per-
form the following procedure:
1. Stop the vehicle.
2. Move the shift lever into the PARK position.
3. Turn off the engine; be sure to turn the key to
the LOCK position.
4. Wait approximately 10 seconds, and then re-
start the engine.
5. Move the shift lever into the desired gear
range.
If the problem is no longer detected, the transmis-
sion will return to normal operation. If the problem
persists, PARK, REVERSE, and NEUTRAL will
continue to operate. Only 2nd gear range will
operate in the DRIVE position. Have the transmis-
sion checked at your authorized dealer as soon as
possible.
FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE OPERATION

Transfer
Case — If Equipped
Operating Information & Precautions
The Selec-Trac II
!
active on-demand transfer
case provides four positions:
•
2 (rear) Wheel Drive high range
•
4-Wheel Drive auto high range
•
Neutral
•
4-Wheel Drive low range
This transfer case is intended to be driven in either
the 2-Wheel drive position (2WD) or the 4-Wheel
drive Auto position (4WD Auto) for normal street
and highway conditions such as dry hard sur-
faced roads.
For added capability when traversing steep
grades, rough terrain, or extremely poor traction
surfaces, select the transfer case 4WD Low posi-
tion. This position locks the front driveshaft and
rear driveshaft together and forces the front and
rear wheels to rotate at the same speed while
multiplying engine torque.
