Alignment of compressor and unit
To ensure that the compressor and motor have long service lives and vibrationless operation, the
compressor/motor and unit must be aligned with care. Misalignment of the compressor unit may
produce stress and vibrations which can be transmitted to the compressor or motor and cause a
breakdown.
Normally the arrangement of motor and compressor is pre-aligned and mounted stress-free on
the unit to ensure stress-free operation. If the motor has not been mounted from factory, or if the
motor or compressor has been replaced, the arrangement must be aligned properly by shimming
and/or adjustment.
Vibrations may be caused by the following:
1.
Distortion between compressor unit and foundation
2.
Distortion between compressor and base frame
3.
Distortion between motor and base frame
4.
Strains from pipe connections between compressor and plant
5.
Compressor or motor shafts are unbalanced
6.
Coupling is unbalanced
7.
Imperfect balancing of coupling
8.
Imbalance in compressor and motor
The service engineer who installs the unit is responsible for 1 to 4, whereas 5 to 8 must be
checked by the compressor or motor manufacturer prior to delivery.
The following subsections deal with the first four issues.
7.18
Alignment of unit against foundation
When mounting the unit on the foundation or the machine floor, it must rest evenly on all
supports.
The unit can be mounted in the following ways:
•
directly on the foundation with foundation bolts,
see subsection
7.21 Mounting directly on the foundation
•
on vibration dampers, see subsection
7.23 Damping using vibration dampers
In both cases, the unit must be aligned before fitting the connecting pipes to the installation.
7.19
Alignment of compressor and motor
Note:
This section does not apply to units with a flanged tunnel between the compressor and the
motor. Such units have compressor-to-motor alignment through the use of a machined cast iron
tunnel. This tunnel is factory set through machining tolerances ensuring motor compressor align-
ment.
No alignment is required in the field
.
Check that the motor with loose bolts is positioned with all four feet on the base frame. Insert any
liner plates needed if there is an air gap under the feet. Tighten the bolts loosely.
