When possible, it’s best to minimize the number of moving objects in the scanning
environments. They add extruded shapes and additional points to your final pointcloud.
This means that anyone following you while you are scanning will affect the quality of the
scan. In situations where more than 25-30% of the scanner or camera fields of view contain
moving objects, it will cause the incoming scans to be mis-registered. Generally, use

Adding Points
to the scan if people or vehicles are passing by in a scene. If you see
someone approaching you directly, turn away (slowly) to a more static scene.
Scan Tip:
Scanning with Contour always draws intrigue and interest from
anyone watching, especially with the integrated screen displaying the
pointcloud building in real time. And we get it - it’s fun to show off and
demonstrate such a cool, high tech tool. But to get the best data, consider
showing off Contour to curious onlookers before or after your actual scan,
and do the scanning alone.
For longer scan times, consider using the neck strap to avoid arm fatigue and protect
against accidental dropping.
Plan your scan:
•
Scout the area to be scanned beforehand and plan your route.
•
For more complex scans, consider taking some preliminary scans to see how
they come out before committing to a longer scan.
•
Shorter paths that cross are better than a longer, single path.
•
If you can scan a place that you return to, it decreases overall map drift. For
example, in the diagram below it is better to start at 1, rather than 2 (Figure
54). If you start at 2, then move to 1 and back to 2 before proceeding.
