Can Contour be used for scanning outdoors?
We recommend Kaarta Stencil for large interior spaces and outdoor mapping. Stencil
features a 300,000 point per second lidar with range of 100m in combination with a 200Hz
IMU and feature tracking camera. Stencil can accurately produce 3D maps in exterior and
large interior spaces such as urban, suburban, parks, forests, agricultural properties,
shopping malls, stadiums, airports, train and transportation facilities.
How does the camera capture correlated images while one is walking with the
scanner?
The device is constantly determining where it is inside the map it is building. This is
required to build the map accurately. This "trajectory" information is then used to
determine where the device was and how it was pointed at the time of the middle of the
camera image exposure. That time is known very accurately because of hardware
synchronization and the calibration of the camera location relative to the laser.
How long can a battery last during a scan session?
Approximately 1 hour when new. If continuous scanning is planned for longer than 45
minutes, it is recommended to purchase an external battery.
Can the scanner work in harsh environments (e.g. dust, high temperatures)?
No. Please refer to the Contour’s Care section of this manual for more information.
Must the scan be done at a constant height or can I move the scanner at various
height while scanning?
It operates in 3D, so you can change the height during scanning with no issues.
Can we export the scanned file via the USB port? How long will it take?
Yes, Contour has a USB 3.0 port for export to external drives. There is also a button to
transfer scan data in the UI on Contour, in the scan details. The transfer time primarily is
dependent upon whether you are capturing color images and if you want to transfer those
images, along with the raw data (optional) to USB.
In general, 30 minutes of scanning produces roughly 1.5GB of scan data, 19GB of raw data
and up to 12GB of color camera images (if 2Hz saving of color camera images is turned on
