23 Special ignition protection precautions
(e.g. inert gas) must be taken when
cleaning with solvents containing hy-
drocarbons. High pressure jets can cre-
ate electrostatic charging and sparks.
In addition, the detergent used must not
be able to form a second phase be-
cause this can also cause electrostatic
charging. The plant owner/operator is
responsible for this.
When heating the environment, take care to ensure that the hot liquid jet does not strike the interior cleaner.
When using steam to heat the ambient environment, the special boundary conditions of the applicable directives are to be observed.
According to EN 1127-1, the temperature of the cleaning fluid (and thus the surface temperature of the interior cleaner) in an explosion
protection Zone 0 must never exceed 80% of the ignition temperature (measured in °C) of the ambient gas or vapour atmosphere and/
or must never exceed 2/3 of the ignition temperature (measured in °C) of the ambient dust atmosphere (see also DIN EN ISO 80079-36).
The above guideline leads to the following recommendation:
ATEX temperature class
Maximum specified surface temper-
ature [°C]
Maximum permissible surface tem-
perature [°C]
In a gas atmosphere Zone 0
Maximum permissible surface tem-
perature [°C]
In a dust atmosphere Zone 0

For the operation with solvents, acids or brines the following applies:
a) The permitted operating temperature with detergent fluids of the named groups "solvents", "brines" and "acids" is limited to max.
60 °C by Kärcher.
b) The autoignition temperature of all involved substances (cleaning media and soiling / residue in the container) and their mixtures may
not be lower than the following temperature limits:
Devices with ATEX declaration T4:
Ignition temperature for gases >= 170 °C
Ignition temperature for dust >= 205 °C
Devices with ATEX declaration T3:
Ignition temperature for gases >= 250 °C
Ignition temperature for dust >= 300 °C
This means that the ignition temperature of the substances must be higher than the above stated temperature.
Only the operator is responsible for the determination and observance of this temperature limit.
c) The ambient temperature of the equipment during operation must lie between 0 °C and a maximum of +135 °C.
d) In cases where heating of the materials (cleaning medium and contamination/residues) to a maximum value of 60 °C increases the
chemical-physical aggressiveness or corrosive properties of the materials and mixtures regarding material resistance and operation-
al safety, the operator must ensure that stainless steel (non-rusting steel) of class 1.4301 and comparable material alloys are not
attacked.
e) For additional risks that may arise due to the increased temperature (e.g. from gases, fumes, hot surfaces or the like), suitable pro-
tective measures for the operating personnel must be ensured by the operator.
f) In general, it must be expected that the wear of the components increases with increasing temperature of the cleaning medium when
using aggressive cleaning media. Thus, the maintenance and inspection intervals for the device must be shortened if it is operated
with aggressive media and increased temperatures.
