10.5 Negotiating steps and curbs
Please note that it is always better to avoid curbs or steps. It
’
s better to use
ramps whenever possible.
If possible, ask for help from an assistant/attendant while negotiating steps
and curbs.
⚫
Always be careful when going up or down curbs and never negotiate
curbs backwards without an attendant.
Warning
Do not go up or down steps that are higher than 25 mm.
Caution
⚫
The anti-tippers may get caught on the curb, which may
cause the user to fall out. If necessary, deactivate the anti-
tippers beforehand. Remember to rotate it back afterwards.
⚫
Avoid strong impacts when going down curb.
10.5.1 Going up steps/curbs

The attendant should hold the handle and tip the wheelchair backwards so
that the front casters lift off the ground. Refer to 12.4.5.

The attendant should then hold the wheelchair in this position, push it
carefully down the step and then tilt it forwards until the front casters are
back on the ground.
Caution
Never allow the chair to tip forwards when going down a step or
curb.
