17-2-3 SCR system cleaning
(T218151-029-0E)
Cleaning involves minimizing the amount of DEF deposits within the SCR system and then cleaning out the remaining
deposits by generating heat with a diesel oxidation catalyst
(
DOC
)
using a small amount of fuel aftertreatment spray.
There are three cleaning modes for Cummins engines.
(1)
Passive cleaning
Passive cleaning uses exhaust temperatures that occur during normal engine operation to clean deposits naturally.
This is the normal operating mode, so there no special setting changes or precautions required.
(2) Automatic cleaning
When the exhaust temperature is not high enough for passive cleaning, this mode is used to clean deposits by
automatically using a fuel aftertreatment spray to increase the exhaust temperature.
Because this involves raising the exhaust temperature, be careful of burn injuries or fire ignited from the hot
exhaust gas or exhaust system surfaces.
(3) Manual cleaning
If operating load levels are low and automatic cleaning was not performed, the operator can initiate cleaning
manually. The engine speed is increased to about 1000 min
-1
during manual cleaning.
Due to the increased engine speed, be careful of burn injuries and fire, just like for the automatic cleaning mode.
1) Manual cleaning method
If the indicator lamp flashes orange, the manual cleaning switch
(same as the indicator lamp) must be pressed to
clean deposits. Cleaning can also be initiated via a pop-up screen.
To cancel manual cleaning before it is finished, press the SCR cleaning cancel switch. If any of the conditions
indicated in
③
are not satisfied, manual cleaning is canceled. If the manual cleaning was canceled, the manual
SCR cleaning process is not finished. Therefore, restart manual cleaning process promptly.
