Glossary
piece A discrete segment of substrate upon which the image is printed.
For example, an envelope.
power-on cycle (POC) The sequence of procedures the printer
performs when it is turned on. The procedures include an internal
diagnostics test of the hardware, the warming of fluids, and a printhead
clean.
print array The 1.06-in. (2.69-cm) line of holes (orifices) in the
printhead through which ink jets are formed to create an image.
print density The number of dots of ink used to produce a dot of ink on
the substrate.
printhead The part of the printer that forms charged ink drops, allows
uncharged drops to fall on the substrate, and recovers charged drops for
return to the fluid cabinet. The printhead receives data in bitmap format
and, using ink and charge voltages, creates inkjet images.
print width The maximum width of the area that can be printed by the
printhead, usually provided in inches or dots.
printhead height The distance between the bottom of the printhead
and the substrate.
replenisher A fluid contained within a plastic bottle, mounted inside
the fluid compartment, that maintains the proper concentration of ink.
resolution The degree of sharpness of an image, measured in dpi.
shrunken print A printing problem characterized by shortened (or
shrunken) characters that occurs when tach and cue parameters are set
incorrectly or the document transport is not operating properly.
streaker A recurring streak of ink (or solid black line) caused by one or
more jets printing continuously or by ink dripping from a part of the
printhead, creating a line (streak) on the substrate. Streakers are caused
by improper voltage levels and dirty printheads.
substrate The surface on which an image is printed. The substrate can
be a continuous sheet (web) or separate pieces of various types of
material.
substrate length The length of a piece of substrate.
