REASSEMBLY
The following sequence i s suggested f o r r e a s s e m b l i n g engine a f t e r components have been recon-
ditioned and a l l s u b - a s s e m b l y work, s u c h a s r e i n s t a l l i n g b e a r i n g s , guides, bushings, e t c . , h a s been
completed. The p r o c e d u r e m a y be v a r i e d slightly t o a c c o m m o d a t e s p e c i a l equipment u s e d on c e r t a i n
engines. Also the p r o c e d u r e v a r i e s i n c e r t a i n a r e a s b e c a u s e of design d i f f e r e n c e s between the v a r i o u s
d i f f e r e n c e s a r e c a l l e d out w h e r e the s e q u e n c e i s affected.

Tappets: Lightly c o a t outside of tappets with
then i n s e r t i n tappet b o r e .

p e t s a r e i d e n t i c a l and a r e t h e r e f o r e interchangeable between intake and e x h a u s t and between
the c y l i n d e r banks if new tappets a r e u s e d .
If
old t a p p e t s a r e u s e d , i n s t a l l in s a m e position
a s r e m o v e d (noted in D i s a s s e m b l y Section).

C a m s h a f t : Check t o m a k e s u r e oil hole i n c a m s h a f t s l e e v e b e a r i n g l i n e s up with c r a n k c a s e
porting, l u b r i c a t e c a m s h a f t and b e a r i n g s , t h e n c a r e f u l l y guide c a m s h a f t through b e a r i n g s
( f r o n t end f i r s t ) and into position i n block.
Install welch plug a t r e a r end of camshaft if t h i s
h a s been removed.

m o d e l s u s e s l e e v e b e a r i n g s a t both ends
of
c r a n k s h a f t , o t h e r m o d e l s have a s l e e v e h e a r i n g a t the f r o n t a n d a b a l l b e a r i n g a t the
r e a r o r c l o s u r e plate end. On t h e models with t h e b a l l bearing, the c l o s u r e p l a t e m u s t b e
a s s e m b l e d t o t h e c r a n k s h a f t a s p e r i n s t r u c t i o n s i n t h e Reconditioning S e c t i o n b e f o r e the c r a n k -
s h a f t i s i n s t a l l e d i n t h e block.
On
t h i s type, t h e b a l l b e a r i n g i s locked i n position and this
c o n t r o l s c r a n k s h a f t end play. If t h e retaining r i n g s , grooves and b e a r i n g a r e i n good shape,
the end p l a y should b e within l i m i t s .
