API QUICK START®
After water changes and addition
of new fish
Fill the aquarium with water to within
one inch of the top of the tank. Do
not overfill since spillage may occur.
Add Stress Coat packet to your
aquarium. Stress Coat makes tap
water safe; removes chlorine, chlora-
mines and ammonia from tap water
and has been proven to reduce fish
stress by 40%.
Patience is important when establishing
your new aquarium. Begin by talking to an
aquatic professional about which fish are
best suited for your aquarium and are com-
patible with each other, and how many
would be appropriate for your aquarium.
Inform them that you have just set up a new
aquarium so they can recommend hardy
fish. Be sure that the fish are eating and
acting normally. Check for ragged fins that
can be caused by harmful bacteria or white
spots caused by parasites. Always choose
healthy looking fish.
Do not add too many fish at once. Choose a
couple and then wait two weeks before
adding more. (Optional) Add Quick Start to
allow immediate addition of fish. Quick
Start prevents harmful ammonia and nitrite
from building up from fish waste in a new
aquarium, often resulting in fish loss.
Float the bag with your fish on the
surface of the aquarium for 15 minutes.
Open the bag containing your new fish,
taking care that the bag does not
collapse, and add a little aquarium water
every two minutes directly to bag.
Continue this process for 10 minutes,
allowing the bag to fill with water.
Take bag with fish to sink and gently
scoop fish out with a net or pour bag of
water into net. Now gently place fish
into aquarium. Do not add water from
fish bag in order to prevent introduction
of possible disease or parasites from
store water.
(Optional) If you are adding a submersi-
ble heater, install it now.
Read and follow the heater’s instructions.
Check with your retailer for recommend-
ed heater size and settings.
Adjust heater settings as directed.
Heater not included, must be
purchased separately
8. Optional Heater
Perform a 25% water change monthly
(more frequently if necessary), use a
vacuum gravel siphon to thoroughly
remove any uneaten food and waste
buildup.
Use Stress Coat when adding or
changing water and adding fish.
Test pH, ammonia and nitrite weekly
using API 5 in 1 Aquarium Test Strips.
Performing these tests will allow you
to monitor the water quality of your
aquarium. If readings are not in the
preferred range, perform a partial
water change.
Confirm water in aquarium
has reached room temper-
ature, recommended 70
degrees to 78 degrees.
