SAFE PARKING PROCEDURES
The operator must continue the use of safety precau-
tions when preparing for parking and engine shutdown.
In the event that the equipment is being worked in
consecutive shifts, any questionable truck perfor-
mance the operator may have noticed must be
checked by maintenance personnel before the truck
is released to another operator.
1. Park the truck on level ground, if possible. If
parking on a grade, position the truck perpen-
dicular to the grade.
2. Apply the parking brake and install wheel
chocks so that the truck cannot roll. Park each
truck a safe distance from one another.
3. Haul roads are not safe parking areas. In an
emergency, pick the safest spot most visible to
other machines in the area. If the truck becomes
disabled, mark the truck with warning flags in
daylight, or flares at night.
ENGINE SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE
The following procedure must be followed at each
engine shutdown.
1. Stop the truck. Reduce the engine rpm to low
idle. Place the selector switch in NEUTRAL and
apply the parking brake switch. If the engine
shutdown with timer delay is preferred, refer to
the Delayed Engine Shutdown procedure.
2. Allow the engine to cool gradually at low idle for
three to five minutes.
3. With the truck stopped and the engine cool, turn
the key switch counterclockwise to OFF for nor-
mal shutdown of the engine. If the engine does
not shutdown with the key switch, use the
engine shutdown switch on the center console
(see Operator Controls section).
4. With the key switch OFF and the engine
stopped, wait at least 90 seconds. Ensure the
pressure is relieved in the steering circuit by
turning the steering wheel back and forth sev-
eral times. No front wheel movement will occur
when hydraulic pressure is relieved.
5. Close and lock all windows, remove the key
from the key switch, and lock the cab to prevent
possible unauthorized truck operation. Dis-
mount the truck properly.
DELAYED ENGINE SHUTDOWN
PROCEDURE
Refer to Section N, Operator Cab and Controls, for
identification of the various switches and indicator
lights.
1. Stop the truck. The truck must be away from
other traffic, on a level surface, and away from
overhead power lines or other obstructions.
2. Reduce the engine speed to low idle.
3. Place the selector switch in NEUTRAL.
4. Apply the parking brake switch. Ensure the
parking brake applied indicator light in the over-
head display panel is illuminated.
5. Move the top of the engine shutdown switch to
the ON (center) position. Then, firmly press the
switch to the MOMENTARY (upper) position.
Hold this position briefly to activate the idle
timer. The switch is spring-loaded and will
return to the ON position when released.
6. When the engine shutdown
timer has been activated,
the timer delay indicator light
in the overhead display
panel will illuminate to indi-
cate that the shutdown tim-
ing sequence has been
started. The engine will continue to idle for
approximately three minutes to allow the engine to
properly cool before turning off.
NOTE: The engine shutdown timer switch does not
turn off the 24VDC electric power.
