Editing FM Layers
FM layers can be used to emulate classic FM synthesizers by using 6 Operators in 1 of
32 algorithms. FM layers also allow FM synthesis techniques to be combined with VAST
synthesis features to create never before heard sounds.
FM layers contain pages that are not available in VAST layers. This includes the FM Main
page, the FM Operator page, the FM Layer page, the FM Amp + Output Page, and the FM
Alt Input Page. See the sections below for details on each of these pages. The remaining pages
in FM layers are common to FM and VAST layers. For descriptions of these pages see the
relevant VAST sections of this chapter.
FM Layer Structure
Each FM layer contains 6 Operators in 1 of 32 algorithms. The 6 Operators are the primary
sound source in FM layers. Each Operator contains an oscillator with amplitude controlled
by an envelope generator. FM synthesis allows you to modulate the frequency of the
Operators in order to create many timbres.
FM MAIN Page
In FM layers, the FM Main page allows you to edit the main parameters of each FM
Operator in the layer.
The parameters for each Operator are shown on the page in rows. The left hand column
shows the Operator number for each row. Use the navigation buttons to select each row and
parameter.
