FM Alt Input Page
In classic FM synthesis, Operators containing sine wave oscillators are used to frequency
modulate other Operators in various configurations in order to create complex timbres. FM
layers allow you to use an alternate input for these Operators, allowing sources other than
FM Operators to be used for modulation of other FM Operators. This is useful for easily
creating complex timbres without complex configurations of Operators and modulation
sources.
The FM alternate input allows FM Operators in the current layer to be modulated by a
Keymap in the current layer, or by any type of audio signal from a different FM or VAST
layer. FM synthesis techniques can be combined with VAST synthesis features to create never
before heard sounds.
Modulating an FM Operator with a Keymap
Follow these steps to modulate an FM Operator with a Keymap in the current layer:
1. On the FM Operator page, use the Operator parameter to select an Operator to
modulate.
2. On the FM Operator page, set the Input Source parameter for the selected Operator to
Keymap.
3. On the Keymap page, use the Keymap parameter to select a Keymap.
4. On the FM Alt Input page, use the Keymap Level parameters to adjust the keymap level.
The keymap level determines the amount of modulation applied to the selected Operator.
