Multiple Multiswitch Installation
If there is a need for more than four IRDs, it is possible to
carry out a multiple multiswitch installation, as illustrated in
Figure 2-21.
2.5 Connecting the IRD to
Vessel Power
IRDs are intended for use in the home where AC power is
relatively clean. Typical ship’s power may have sufficient noise,
distortion, etc., to cause the IRD to lock up and prevent the low-
speed data port from working. IRDs are also extremely
susceptible to AC power fluctuations that can occur, for example,
when switching from shore power to generator power or from
generator to generator. When power fluctuations occur, the
TracVision Cruiser will occasionally lose communication with the
IRD. KVH recommends that a UPS be installed in line with the
IRD power.

Connecting to Multiple
Multiswitches
The long-term fix, typically done at
original system installation, is to
install an Uninterruptible Power
Supply (UPS) like those available
for use with computer systems. Be
sure to specify a UPS with
adequate available current for all
devices attached to it. (IRDs draw
approximately 200 watts each.)
