2-5.9.5 Set INITIATE DIRECT DIAL
This feature supports the United States Navy’s Direct Dial program. The Navy program developed a new
Gateway/Interworking Function (GW/IWF) to support the connection of terminals on independent
ISDN/PSTN networks (such as shipboard and shore based networks). You can connect over satellite
networks and dial direct, with no Operators required. Although the GW/IWF supports calls between all
types of terminals, special STU-III based digital signaling is incorporated to provide enhanced
performance over narrowband GW/IWF links (2.4, 2.8 and 9.6 kbps) when the STEs are on ISDN circuits.
For wideband link operation (64 and 128 kbps), modifications were made to support STE signaling in the
presence of added transmission delays.
The INITIATE DIRECT DIAL menu (
) shows whether the feature is ENABLED or DISABLED.
The default setting is “DISABLED”.
