INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
The MPM-1000A Ruggedized IP Modem (hereafter called the Modem) is a software-
defined, Internet Protocol (IP)-based Satellite Modem that implements the Network
Centric Waveform (NCW) specified by MIL-STD-188-EEE. The Modem may also be
configured to implement Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) Frequency Division
Multiple Access (FDMA) specified by MIL-STD-188-165A.
The Modem is capable of simultaneously transmitting on up to two (2) TDMA channels
while receiving on up to four (4) TDMA channels. The Modem includes an 802.3
Ethernet interface compatible with 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T and 1000BASE-T. The
Modem supports full duplex communication operations, providing Intermediate
Frequency (I/F) modulation and demodulation, high performance Forward Error
Correction (FEC) encoding and decoding, IP capability, and a variety of input/output
(I/O) interfaces in a compact 1U rack-mountable chassis. All external connections to the
unit are located on the rear panel with the exception of transmit and receive channel
monitor port connectors on the front panel. Because of its small size, it can be installed
in wheeled vehicles as well as fixed sites.
The NCW mode supports Internet Protocol over Satellite (IPoS) connectivity between a
local LAN and a remote LAN using standard 1000 Base-T Ethernet interfaces. NCW
mode also supports a digital voice baseband interface enabling simultaneous,
bi-directional transfer of digitized voice data.
When used in the NCW mode the Modem provides full duplex transmission of Internet
Protocol (IP) data between local and remote LANs via satellite through its Ethernet data
port using Multiple Frequency Time Division Multiple Access (MF-TDMA) operation as
defined in MIL-STD-188-EEE.
SCPC mode provides a full-duplex serial data stream over the satellite using FDMA. It
routes user data through an RS-422/RS-423 baseband interface located on the back
panel of the unit. BPSK modulation is supported from 64 kilo bytes per second (kbps) to
6.0 Mega bytes per second (Mbps) and Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK)/Offset
Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (OQPSK) modulation from 64 kbps to 8.472 Mbps.
SCPC performance is as specified in MIL-STD-188-165A with the exception of using
Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation from 6.0 Mbps to 6.3 Mbps.
The primary interface for Control, Monitor and Alarm (CMA) of the Modem is a Human-
Computer Interface (HCI) application running on a PC attached via Ethernet cable to the
Modem
‟s CDU port. Modem operation is organized into four (4) modes of operation:
MIL-STD-188-165A Waveform: In this mode, the Modem is configured as an
SCPC Modem conforming to MIL-STD-188-165A. See Section 11 for more
detailed information on using this mode.
