Glossary of Terms
Global System for Mobile Communications [GSM]
Standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to describe
protocols for second-generation (2G) digital cellular networks used by mobile devices.
Mobile Virtual Network Operator [MVNO]
These are virtual network operators who resell access to the major network operators’
infrastructure and generally offer their own customer service, billing support systems,
marketing and sales personnel.
Short Message Service [SMS]
Text messaging service allowing short text messages to be sent between devices
connected via a GSM network.
Subscriber Identity Module [SIM]
Integrated circuit that securely stores the international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI)
and the related key used to identify and authenticate subscribers on mobile telephony
devices. In simple terms, a chip which identifies who is paying the bill for any network
services that are used.
