Step 2: Set up a rack
Install your system in a 4-post rack or Lenovo system rack, as applicable. If you are setting up a new rack for
the storage array, follow instructions that come with the rack.
Step 3: Install rails
When shipped, each shelf includes rack-mounting hardware. For detailed instructions on installing the rails,
refer to the installation manual that comes with the rail kit.
Step 4: Connect cables
The
Installation and Setup Instructions
include instructions for connecting cables. If you need lists of
supported cables and transceivers, best practices for cabling, and detailed information about the host ports
for your controller, refer to “Cabling your storage system ” on page 24.
Step 5: Configure hosts
To make storage available to a host, refer to one of the following to configure the host depending on the
host's operating system type:
• “Windows express configuration” on page 32
• “VMware express configuration” on page 49
• “Linux express configuration” on page 64
Step 6: Configure storage
To configure storage, you can access the web-based interface, ThinkSystem System Manager, by pointing a
browser to the controller's IP address. A setup wizard helps you get started with system configuration. As an
alternative, you can also use the command line interface (CLI). Select the interface you want to use:

Cabling your storage system
You can cable a host directly to a controller or use switches to connect a host to a controller. If your storage
system includes one or more drive shelves, you must cable them to your controller shelf. You can add a new
drive shelf while power is still applied to other components of the storage system. In addition, you can
connect your storage system to a network for out-of-band management.
