Replacing the system board
CAUTION:
The heat sink and microprocessor might be very hot. Turn off the computer and
wait three to five minutes to let the computer cool before opening the computer
cover.

Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the

Note:
When replacing the system board a new retention module for the
microprocessor heat sink is required. Make sure you have a new retention
module before beginning this procedure.
This section provides instructions on how to remove and replace the system board.
The procedure varies depending upon the machine type.
1.
Remove the cover. See “Removing the computer cover” on page 85.
2.
Place the computer on its right side to help make the system board more
accessible.
3.
Remove any adapter cards installed in the PCI connectors.
4.
Disconnect the signal and power cables from the hard disk drive and remove
the hard disk drive out of the chassis. See “Replacing the primary hard disk
drive” on page 102.
5.
Disconnect the heat sink and fan assembly cable from the system board. And
lift the heat sink and fan assembly off the failing system board. See the system
board illustration for your machine type at “System board connectors” on
page 84.
6.
Carefully take note of the location of all cable connections on the system
board and disconnect all cables. See the system board illustration for your
machine type at “System board connectors” on page 84.
7.
Remove the screws that secure the system board to the chassis.
8.
Remove the failing system board out of the chassis.
9.
Install the new retention module to the new system board.
10.
Remove the memory modules from the failing system board and install them
in the same location on the new system board.
11.
Install the new system board into the chassis and align the screw holes with
those in the chassis. Insert and tighten the screws that secure the system
board.
12.
Install the new Microprocessor in the new system board. See “Replacing the
microprocessor” on page 94.
13.
Install the heat sink and fan assembly on the system board. See “Replacing the
heat sink and fan assembly” on page 92.
14.
Connect the heat sink and fan assembly cable to the new system board. See
the system board illustration for your machine type at “System board
connectors” on page 84.
