1. Remove all external media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server. Then,
disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to
the server.
2. Prepare your server. See “Removing or extending the server from the rack cabinet” on page 65.
3. Remove the server cover. See “Removing the server cover” on page 65.
4. Remove the cooling shroud. See “Removing and reinstalling the cooling shroud” on page 68.
5. Locate the memory slots on the system board and read the memory module installation rules. See
“Memory module installation rules” on page 74. Remove the memory dummy if one is installed. See
“Removing a memory module” on page 80.
6. Disconnect any cables that might impede your access to the memory slots.
7. Open the retaining clips of the appropriate memory slot.

8. Touch the static-protective package that contains the new memory module to any unpainted surface on
the outside of the server. Then, take the new memory module out of the package.
Note:
Carefully handle the memory module by its edges.
