4. Remove the CPU from the CPU socket.

Release the small handle as shown.

Lift the handle upward until the handle and the CPU retainer are in the fully open position.

Hold the CPU by its sides and carefully lift it straight up and out of the CPU socket.
Notes:
• Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the CPU.
• Do not drop anything onto the CPU socket while it is exposed. The socket pins must be kept as
clean as possible.

5. Install a new CPU. See “Installing the CPU” on page 105.
6. If you are instructed to return the old CPU, follow all packaging instructions and use any packaging
materials that are supplied to you for shipping.
Installing the CPU
To install the CPU, do the following:
1. Prepare your server and remove the server cover. See “Preparing your server in advance and removing
2. Lay the server on its side for easier operation.
3. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly. See “Removing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 95.
4. If needed, remove the CPU. See “Removing the CPU” on page 104.
