WARNING AND CAUTIONS:
• TO BE INSTALLED AND/OR USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPROPRIATE ELECTRICAL CODES AND REGULATIONS
• IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT ANY PART OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS, CONSULT AN ELECTRICIAN.
• TO AVOID FIRE, SHOCK, OR DEATH;
TURN OFF POWER AT CIRCUIT BREAKER OR FUSE AND TEST THAT THE POWER IS OFF
BEFORE WIRING.
• INCORRECT ASSEMBLY OR INSTALLATION MAY RESULT IN FIRE, ELECTRICAL PROPERTY DAMAGE, SHOCK, PERSONAL INJURY, OR DEATH.
• A SURGE PROTECTIVE DEVICE IN A FEED-THROUGH BRANCH CIRCUIT WILL PROVIDE PROTECTION ONLY FOR LOADS WIRED DIRECTLY TO
IT. IT WILL NOT PROVIDE PROTECTION TO ANY OTHER DEVICES ON THE SAME BRANCH CIRCUIT.
• USE THIS DEVICE WITH
COPPER OR COPPER CLAD WIRE ONLY.
DESCRIPTION
Leviton Surge Protective Device (SPD) module, Cat. No. 3801-DIN is intended for use with sensitive electronic equipment, such as Industrial Control Panels,
electronic analysis and monitoring equipment and other applications with solid state circuitry that would benefit from protection against damage caused by
transient surges.
FEATURES
• This device is intended for single branch circuits only.
• The indicator light denotes surge suppression is effective when it is continuously ON.
• This device does not supply ground fault or overload protection.
• This device protects against surges at this module only.
• When the indicator light turns OFF, the device is no longer providing suppression. The entire unit must be replaced, if surge suppression is required.
•
Power continues to be supplied to the receptacle/output screw terminals in the event of a surge suppression circuit failure.
• Modules should be replaced as soon as possible, after a failure is noted.
Solid state semi-conductor SPD circuitry for:
• 3801-DIN (Line to Neutral, Line to Ground and Neutral to Ground protection).
• SPD is enclosed in a non-conductive ABS case. ABS is a flame retardant thermoplastic, compliant with UL 746C polymeric material test requirements.
• SPD is intended to supply 125 VAC to plug-in equipment while providing feed-through capability for hard-wired 125 VAC equipment
(see Figs. 1 & 2).
TO INSTALL
Location and Mounting:
1.
WARNING:
TURN OFF POWER AT THE INSTALLATION LOCATION.
2. Locate the SPD so that its hard-wired or plug-in connections can be easily connected to AC Power without excessive tension on the wiring connections.
Use the two slotted “feet” or the DIN Rail clip to mount housing.
3. Connection of the SPD to chassis ground may be done via the wiring terminals (see Figs. 1 & 2). Grounding for the SPD can also be provided by using
the metallic base plate and/or the attached braided cable.
DO NOT ADD ANY EXTENSION TO THE “BRAIDED CABLE TO GROUND” PATH.
Wiring Procedure:
WARNING:
VERIFY THAT EQUIPMENT POWER AT THE SPD INSTALLATION LOCATION HAS BEEN
TURNED OFF.
NOTE: Power cabling used for 3801-DIN connections should be the same as that used to connect the equipment where protection is desired.
A short version of this cable should be prepared for connection between the OUTPUT “Line, Neutral, Gnd” terminals for the 3801-DIN and the INPUT
to the equipment.
1. Connect the power input cable previously used for connection to equipment to the SPD’s three terminals indicated in Fig. 2.
Note: Fig. 2 shows an organized connection. Actually, due to the parallel SPD circuit, there is no dedicated Input or Output screw terminals.
2. If protecting hard-wired equipment, connect one end of the short power cable to the remaining three screw terminals (see Fig. 2).
3. If protecting corded equipment, plug-in the AC power plug into the front of the 3801-DIN.
4. Connect the other end of the short cable to the equipment to be protected.
POWER ON: After reconnection of the equipment, restore power to the installation circuit by turning the input power ON.
INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE.
