General Information on Use of a Wheelchair  

15.1.

 

Driving the wheel chair: How to avoid tipping over 

Please note that when starting pushing the wheel chair, the front wheels are going to 

lose traction due to acceleration. Depending on weight distribution this may cause the 

wheels to lift off the ground and the wheel chair to tip over backwards. 

  

 

The situation mentioned above intensifies when using different rear wheel positions to 

achieve greater seat inclination, by too-vigorously engaging the drive wheel in the 
forwards direction or by using a cushion for elevated seating. 
Please note that the weight of personal belongings (e.g. bags) can have a major effect 

on the centre of gravity of your wheel chair which may lead to increased instability. 

 

For more security while driving the installation of an anti-tip mechanism is strongly 
advised.
