RhB Heidi G 3/4 Steam Loco
THE PROTOTYPE
During the early 20th century, the
Rhäthische Bahn (RhB) extended its
rail network from Landquart via Chur
to Disentis and Thusis. This necessi-
tated the purchase of new locomo-
tives.
Already between 1889 and 1896, the
RhB had obtained eight 2-6-0 G 3/4
steam locos. In 1902, the railroad
ordered eight additional, slightly
enlarged locomotives of the same
type from the Schweizer Lokomotiv-
und Maschinenfabrik (Swiss
Locomotive and Machine Works,
SLM) in Winterthur, including G 3/4
No. 11. Five years later, the RhB pur-
chased two additional G 3/4 for the
newly opened line from Davos to
Filisur.
During the coal shortages of World
War I, the RhB decided to convert
their network to electric catenary
operation. As catenary installation
progressed, most RhB steam locos
were sold to other railroads starting
in 1920. However, the G 3/4 11
remained with the RhB and was used
for switching duties and as a backup
in case of power failures.
In 1952, the loco was used during
the filming of the world-famous
"Heidi" movie. The now-famous loco
was called "Heidi," and the loco crew
painted this name on the smokebox
door. Even though the lettering was
removed whenever the loco was
overhauled in the RhB shops, it
always reappeared within a short
period of time.
In 1977, the RhB sold "Heidi" to the
"Modelleisenbahnfreunde Eiger"
(Eiger model railroad friends) in
Zweilütschinen, who used the loco to
haul special trains until the deterio-
rating condition of its boiler did not
allow further operation. Today, the
historic loco is owned by the Club
1889. The enthusiastic volunteer of
this group are restoring "Heidi," so it
can run again.
