ÖBB Diesel Loco,
2095 004-4, Sound
THE PROTOTYPE
When the Österreichische Bun-
desbahnen (ÖBB, Austrian
Federal Railways) realized that
new locomotives were needed on
several of their narrow gauge
lines, they ordered 15 of these
600 horsepower diesel locos bet-
ween 1958 and 1962. Combining
new and old technology, power
from the 12-cylinder engine is
transferred to one axle of each
power truck via a hydraulic drive-
train, while the second axle is
powered by connecting rods.
For more than 40 years, these
locomotives have served nume-
rous lines in Austria, including the
Mariazellerbahn and the lines
from Zell am See to Krimml and
on the Ybbstal Railway, where the
prototype of the LGB model
works today.
