Classroom environment studies
Subject: Biology/Environmental studies
Sensor: SmartEye sensor and HiTemp temperature sensor
Overview:
Environmental studies are becoming more and more important in every day life. The environment we work in is also important and this simple proce-
dure shows how to obtain temperature and light readings from the classroom.
This procedure also can be used as a simple introduction to the use of scientific equipment, ICT and how to analyse results and draw conclusions from
collected data.
Equipment required:
LogIT Black Box
SmartEye light sensor
Temperature sensor
Computer.
Hazards:
Students should be supervised at all times
Ensure the datalogger cannot come into contact with water or damp.
Always check your local regulations or the school advisory service such as CLEAPSS or SSERC for
guidance on the use of any hazardous material or source.
Setup:
1. Find a secure place for Black Box and the sensors.
2. Plug the sensors into two channels of Black Box.
3. Connect the Black Box to the computer using the USB cable and start the datalogging software.
4. Decide if you are going to log data either first thing in the morning, last thing in the afternoon or for just the lesson.
Note: This simple procedure can be set up and allowed to log for either 30 mins during which time the environment in the room can be
discussed or allowed to run for 12 or 24 hours and discussed during the next lesson. Make sure that the screen saver for the computer is
deactivated to prevent the logging from being interrupted which can happen on some computers.
