Ignition Switch & Starter Button
For vehicles that have covered a total
distance of less than 600 miles (1,000km)
also refer to 'Running-In' information on
page 74.
Ignition Switch/Steering Lock Positions
Located on the right hand side of the steer-
ing column. With the key out of the switch,
the steering column is locked and the fol-
lowing electrical circuits will function:
- Locking and alarm system.
- Horns.
- Hazard warning lamps.
- Sidelamps and headlamps.
- Interior lamps.
- Fuel filler flap release.
- Automatic operation of cooling fans and
re-circulation pump.
0 With the key inserted at position ‘0’, the
audio system is now
also available.
INSTRUMENTS, SWITCHES & TELL TALE LAMPS
I To unlock the steering, turn the key
clockwise to the
‘I’ position.
If the key is reluctant to turn, wriggle the
steering wheel to ease the load on the
steering lock. At this ‘accessories’ position
the following electrical circuits will function
in addition to those in position 0:
- Door windows.
- Windscreen wiper and washer.
- Interior fan.
- Cabin auxiliary power socket.
- P - Park is automatically selected
(Automatic vehicles)
WARNING
Do not push or tow the car unless the key
is first used to unlock the steering column
and is then left in the lock. Withdrawing
the key will cause the steering to lock.
To reduce the risk of danger to a child
remaining in the car, always remove the
key when leaving a parked car.
NOTICE:
To avoid draining the battery
DO NOT leave the ignition switched on
for long periods without the engine
running.

II Turn further clockwise to ‘ignition’ posi-
tion to activate all remaining electrical
systems (some systems require the
engine running). Refer also to alarm auto
re-arm details on page 19.

Starting the Engine
1. Ensure the parking brake is applied.
2. Switch off any unnecessary electrical
loads
3. Manual vehicles: Check that the
transmission is in neutral and depress
the clutch pedal, (the engine will not
turn over if the clutch pedal is not
depressed).
3. Automatic vehicles: Ensure P – Park or
N - Neutral is selected and apply light
foot pressure to the brake pedal.
4. Turn the key to position

5. Press the ‘Engine Start’ button in the
instrument panel positioned above the
light switch.
6. Release the button as soon as the
engine starts.
If the engine fails to start within 15 seconds,
release the starter button and pause for
10 seconds before a second attempt. If
further efforts are unsuccessful, contact
your dealer.
