Above indications mostly consider the height for creating appropriate basking areas. In glass vivariums
additional heat sources might be necessary to create the right ambient air temperature. For wooden viva-
riums like the Lucky Reptile FurniTarriums a Bright Sun is usually sufficient as sole light and heat source.
The indications made at “common vivarium height” and “typical vivariums” relates to an installation inside
the vivarium. When installing the lamp outside the vivarium, e.g. by putting it on a wiremesh lid, consider
that UV, light and heat getting to the animal will be reduced significantly. Depending on the material (gauze
or wiremesh) the reduction can be 30-80%. The gauze of Lucky Reptile HerpTarriums filters about 30% of
the lamps output. Please use our UV Calculator to determine the right distance to your animals in relation
to the used material. Reduce the values giving in the distance chart by the percental reduction due to the
material between lamp and animal. Recommended distances are show in green in the UV Calculator. Yellow
results are marginal. They can be sufficient for species with lower UV requirements.
For climbing species like for example day geckos it is sensible to install the lighting outside the vivarium,
where it cannot be reached by the animals. Correspondingly you will also find some vivarium sizes in the
chart, with the recommendation to put the lamp on top of the wiremesh.
