Installation
1. Electrical
Power to the c ash dr awer is supplied thr ough a
small 12 VDC 0 .5 amp plu g-in module si milar to
those use d by portable tele phone e quipmen t an d
calculators. Use of this module re moves a
possibility of elec trical shock from the me tal
drawer or c ompone nts on the interf ace boar d
and protec ts any e quipment c onnec ted to the
cash dr awer from damage c ause d by accidental
contact with the 115 VAC poten tial of wall power .
The fe male connec tor from the module plu gs into
the jack at the rear ce nter of the c ash dr awe r.
Important Note:
Wh e n chan ging the settings of the switche s on
the interface boar d, the power connec tor mu st
be re move d. Switch settings are only re ad by the
interface at power-up. Ne w se ttings will not be
effective un til power is re move d and re applie d.
2.
Configuring the Interface Board
The KLI C Universal I nterface board suppor ts all
three common ly u se d interface sche mes for
communication to cash drawers. Selec tion of a
par ticular sche me is accomplished by setting four
bank s of DI P (Dual I n-line Pack age ) switche s on
the interface boar d located inside the cash
drawer on its rear pan el. Acce ss to the inter face
board an d the DI P switches is gained by
re moving the plate at the rear of the cash
drawer .
Important Note:
Fac tor y se ttings for the interface boards are
Dead En d Serial mode oper atin g at 1200 bau d
using a drawer open si gnal of CONTROL G. I f this
configuration mee ts your needs, no switch
settings nee d be c han ged. Ch ar ts sh owing
switch se ttings use “0 ” to indicate open/off an d
“1” to i ndicate close d/on .
KLIC Switch Layout
To pr operly set the switche s, you mu st k now
which interface sche me you will be u sing. This
will be de ter mine d by th e equipmen t available
on your c omputer or ter minal, an d an y sof tware
you are using wi th th e cash drawer . The three
interface sche mes are :
Serial
– communication to the c ash dr awer is via
RS232 stan dar d serial c ommunication por t
Parallel
– c ommunication to th e cash dr awer is
via paralle l communic ation por t
Pulse
– drawer open comman d is supplied via a
voltage ch ange from <2.5 VDC to >3 .5 VDC.

communication sche me you will be using.
Serial
Serial communication with the cash dr awer
involves sending a unique drawer opening
charac ter at a speci fic rate calle d the BAUD
rate . An y one of the stan dar d ASCII character
code s may be use d as a drawer opening
charac ter as de ter mi ned by preference or the
sof tware bein g use d.
CONTROL G (ASCI I 7) is often used becau se it is
also the BEL ch arac ter an d man y ter minals e mi t a
shor t beep as the drawer open s. You may also
require an “ ESC” prefix to the dr awer opening by
setting swi tch 8 of bank 1 to on . This re quires
that the “ESC” char acter imme diately pre cede
your dr awer opening charac ter to be recognized
by the drawer .
An y of se ven stan dar d B AUD rate s may be used.
Spee d is not usu ally an i mpor tan t factor when
communicating with a cash drawer . So the
selec tion may be based on prefer ence,
requireme nts of the software use d, or
requireme nts of oth er equipme nt such as a
printer use d in conjunction with the dr awer .
Fac tor y se ttings are f or 1200 B AUD .
The third consideration for serial communication
is whether the cash drawer will be use d in Dead
End mode or in Par asite mode . Using De ad En d
mode mean s that th e cash drawer is the only
de vice connecte d to the serial por t. I f you will
be using a printer , multiple cash drawers, or other
de vices connec te d to the same serial por t, use
the Par asite mode . * NOTE: When a cash dr awer
is the last de vice in the chain it must be set in
Dead En d mode .
