Fuel Oil Condition, when Entering the Engine
As practically all fuel oil specifications including the
above standards refer to the same fuel type as
supplied, the fuel supplied to a ship has to be treated
on board before use. For running on the oil quality
mentioned above it is necessary that equipment
exists on board, which can treat, viz clean and
preheat, the fuel oil with optimum efficiency.
In B 11 00 0 "Cleaning Recommendations" our
recommendations are outlined.
For economical HFO operation the fuel oil condition
at engine inlet should be as recommended below.
For fuels above 180 cSt/50° C a pressurerized fuel
oil system is necessary to avoid boiling and foaming
of the fuel.
The viscosity leaving the heaters should be 10-15
cSt and approx. 12-18 cSt entering the engine. The
maximum temperature of oil after preheater should
be 150° C to avoid to rapid fouling of preheater.
The preheating chart on page 3 illustrates the expect-
ed preheating temperature as function of the specific
fuel oil viscosity.
