2-6-3 Technical memo in case connecting power supply to a load with stored energy
When connecting power supply to any load that stores energy, such as battery, there may be a
flow of reverse current that comes into the internal circuit of the power supply from load.
This reverse current could result the power supply’s life time to shorten or the load to be
damaged.
Thus it is highly recommended to place a diode in series to the load as shown in below
schematic so that reverse current to power supply can be protected.
・ Please see below 3 technical criteria for the selection of proper diode that can
successfully protect power supply and load from reverse current.
1. Tolerated dose to reverse voltage must be approx. twice or higher than the power
supply’s rated output voltage.
2. Forward current capacity must be approx. 3 to 10 times higher than the power
supply’s rated output current.
3. Diode needs to be as efficient as possible.
・ Please be aware of the generation of heat from diode and please arrange to secure
enough heat dissipation. Diode could be burnt to break if heat dissipation is not
enough.
・ The mentioned diode for protection of reverse current cannot be used together
when remote sensing function is in place.
