Overview
The MD8000 SWCNT board switches IP frames flowing through the paths between the Trunk
boards, between the Trunk board and the Channel Service board, and between the Channel
Service boards. The SWCNT board also has the capability of controlling the various
components of the MD8000 system. The SWCNT board consists of two (2) parts, the CPU
part to control and monitor components and the L2SW part to switch IP packets.
The SWCNT board switches the mixed flows of MD8000 Stream frames and Data frames
simultaneously.
In order to obtain a highly reliable system operation, two SWCNT boards can be installed in a
chassis in a 1+1 redundant configuration. One SWCNT serves as the Active unit and the other
the Standby unit. See
— page 2.33 for additional details on the dual
SWCNT operation.
The SWCNT board is equipped with an Ethernet port for a connection to the supervisory
terminal (PC) and two types of ports to accept synchronization clock inputs. The clock
information is delivered to Channel boards.
The SWCNT board also monitors the in-take and exhaust air temperatures and controls the
2-stage rotation speed of the cooling fans.
Static Routing and Dynamic Switching
The SWCNT board switches the mixed flows of MD8000 Stream frames and Data frames
simultaneously. Some of the Trunk boards and Channel Service boards can have up to eight
(8) input/output ports, therefore the SWCNT board has the capability of switching up to
24*8 = 192 Data or Stream packet flows.
