About Alternate Site Testing(AST)
IMPORTANT: For any of the following cases, do not rely on test
results at the alternative sampling sites, but strictly use samples
taken from the

When to use AST?
Food, medication, illness, stress and exercise can a
ff
ect your blood
glucose levels. Capillary blood in the
fi
ngertip re
fl
ects these changes
faster than capillary blood in the alternates sites.
Alternative site test results may be di
ff
erent from
fi
ngertip test results
when glucose level is changing rapidly.
Use AST only when it has been more than two hours after any one of
the followings: a meal, diabetes medication, or exercise.

You think your blood glucose level is low.
■
You have hypoglycemic unawareness (lack of symptoms).
■
The site test results do not agree with the way you feel.
■
After a meal
■
After insulin dose
■
After diabetes medication
■
After exercise

During illness

During times of stress

What’s the advantage?
Fingertips feel pain more readily because they are full of nerve
endings(receptors). At other body sites, nerve endings are not so
numerous, and you will therefore feel less pain.

What is AST?
Alternate site testing(AST) means you can use parts of the body
other than your

ngertips to check your blood glucose levels.
