Manual Coil Tests
NOTE: The process for setting up and executing coil tests is beyond the scope of a Quick Reference
Guide. For that reason, this section provides only an introduction to the Coil Test screen features and
functions. For complete information on setting up and conducting coil and armature tests, refer to the
Megger Baker ADX User Guide.
The Manual Coil Test screen is used when conducting armature and coil testing. The screen provides access to low-
voltage line-to-line resistance, inductance, phase angle, and impedance tests, along with high-voltage surge testing.
Measurements are taken from individual coils or bar-to-bar from the commutator (armature winding). For example, in
the case of testing a DC armature, you can take test measurements on each bar on the commutator.
Because running coil or armature tests in a practical manner requires setting up test references, an Asset and Test
Configuration must be set up before running a test. The Asset is then selected and provides the option to collect test
data that can, for example, show the test results for a batch/lot of coils tested, or an entire set of bar-to-bar readings
from an armature commutator.
NOTE: In this application, an Asset typically refers to a type of coil rather than to a specific individual
coil. Assets can be created for a coil type and re-used over time, often in pass/fail applications where
saving individual test results is not needed. Alternatively, Assets can be created for batches of coils if
you want to save testing information for quality assurance or other applications.
Icons at the top right help you change direction of current flow (Lead 1

indicate equipment stop, edit Test Configuration, Save, Help, and Exit.

Toggle the ACTIVE TEST button (bottom right) to RLZ to run low-voltage tests on the identified coil or Surge to run
surge tests.
Use the controls at the top left to select the type of test results you want to display within the graph from resistance,
inductance, impedance, and phase angle tests. L-R EAR+ (line-to-reference ) values can also be displayed in this area.
Use the controls above the top display area to select the individual coil results you want to display within the graph.
The lower half of the screen displays the results of Surge testing the coil/winding.
