RS-485 Error Responses
and Display Error Codes
• Table 3-20 lists error responses that the module returns if you enter a
command improperly or if a value in a command is out of range.
• Table 3-21 lists error codes produced by the optional pressure display.

Possible Causes
Solution
?XX RANGE ER
Pressure value in TS, TZ, SER, or IDT command is
outside valid limits.
• Make sure atmospheric pressure is > 400 Torr
(533 mbar, 53.3 kPa), then re-send the TS
command (see page 54).
• Make sure vacuum pressure is < 1 x 10
–3
Torr
(1.33 x 10
–3
mbar, 0.13 pascal), then re-send
the TZ command (see page 54).
• Make sure the pressure represented in SER
command is > 1.0 x 10
–7
Torr (1.3 x 10
–7
mbar, 1.3 x 10
–5
pascal) and
<1.0 x 10
–4
Torr (1.3 x 10
–4
mbar, 1.3 x 10
–2
pascal), then re-send the SER command (see
page 52).
• Make sure the number of seconds in the IDT
command is 0 to 600, then re-send the IDT
command (see page 51).
?XX SYNTX ER
• Command was improperly entered.
• Module does not recognize command syntax.
Re-enter the command using the proper
character string.
?XX 9.99E+09
Module cannot indicate a valid pressure value.
• Send the RS command to determine the
• If necessary, replace the gauge assembly
(see page 66).
?XX LOCKED
User attempted to reprogram a locked function
without sending TLU or UNL command.
Send the TLU or UNL command, then re-send
the attempted command (see page 54).
?XX INVALID
Command syntax is correct, but command cannot
be executed in current state (for example, user
attempts to initiate degas cycle while Micro-Ion
gauge is OFF).
Change the module to a valid state for
command, then re-send the attempted
command.
* In each response “XX” represents the module address.

Cause
Solution
Er #1
Conductron sensor is inoperable.
Replace the gauge assembly (see page 66).
Er #5
Micro-Ion gauge grid voltage failure.
Cycle power to the module.
Er #6
Micro-Ion gauge emission failure.
Cycle power to the module.
