1. Introduction - Description of Operation
1
The crease position is measured from the front edge of the sheet. When the sheet is in
the correct position to be creased, the MFC drive motor and creaser roller drive motor
both stop. A powerful stepper motor operates the crease mechanism to form a crease
in the sheet. The MFC drive motor and creaser motor start and the sheet is moved out
of the creaser module and into the gathering area.
A sensor assembly on top of the crease mechanism checks for paper jams in the paper
path. The skew sensors also check that the sheet has left the crease area. If a jam
error is sensed, the MFC will stop.

The Gathering Area
A static elimination bar neutralises the static-electric charge on the paper as it moves
into the gathering area. Sheets of paper with a static-charge will stick together and will
not stack or jog into a tidy book. A high-voltage transformer in the DRV module is
connected to the static elimination bar by an insulated cable and is turned on when the
MFC main input switch is in the ON (I) position.

The A4 Pinch Drive Control Levers
Paper is moved into the gathering area by a group of conveyor guides known as the A4
pinch drive. The A4 pinch drive guides must be set correctly to the length of sheet fed
(see Figure 1.9) so that the sheets can be gathered in the correct order. Additional
guides can be used to control the edges of wider sheets of paper if necessary and an
air knife at the front of the gathering area can be used to control the paper when it is on
the stop latch. The air pressure can be adjusted by a valve inside the gathering area.
When all of the sheets of a set (booklet) have been gathered, an EOS (End Of Set)
signal is sent from the CPU to the base control pcb. The base control PCB operates a
solenoid that is connected to the paper stop latch. The stop latch is pulled open, which
