NEEDLE-TO-DRIVER SETTING &
RACE COVER SPRING CLEARANCE
Note:
These settings seldom change or need adjustment.
Checking Needle-To-Driver Setting & Race Cover Spring Clearance
1. Remove bobbin and hook.
2. Clean the shuttle area, hook and race cover prior to adjusting.
3. Install new needle correctly with the scarf to the inside of the machine (Figure 41).
4. Install race cover.
5. Tilt machine at an angle so that the shuttle area is visible. Turn the handwheel
counterclockwise until the driver passes behind the needle at bottom dead center
of stroke. The driver should just touch, but not deflect the needle (Figure 42). This
setting should be made in the Zigzag position and the needle checked so it does not
deflect on either the inside or outside stitch. The needle should also be centered in
the race cover spring notch (Figure 44).
6. Install hook.
7. Check needle-to-hook clearance. If driver is positioned properly, hook will pass right
behind needle (Figure 42).
8. If either of these settings is out of adjustment, adjust as follows.
Adjusting Needle-To-Driver Setting & Race Cover Spring Clearance
1. Loosen Torx screw on shuttle drive clamp (Figure 45).
2. Move shuttle body in or out as necessary to get driver behind needle, and move it left
or right to center needle in race cover spring (Figures 43 and 44).
3. Tighten Torx screw slightly.
4. Double check clearance, then tighten Torx screw completely.
Note:
Symptoms of a problem with this adjustment are dents on the race cover spring and
burrs on the hook caused by the needle hitting them.
