Chapter 2 Installation and Configuration
System Configuration and Initialization Files
The PXI specification allows many combinations of PXI chassis and
system modules. To assist system integrators, the manufacturers of PXI
chassis and system modules must document the capabilities of their
products. The minimum documentation requirements are contained in
. i n i files, which consist of ASCII text. The . i n i files can be read by the
system integrator and also can be used by configuration utilities and device
drivers, if needed.
The documentation for PXI-101 1 chassis is contained in the chassis . i n i
file on a diskette. The information in this file is combined with information
about the system controller into a single system initialization file called
pxisys . i n i . The system controller manufacturer will either provide
a pxi
sy
s . i n i file for the particular chassis model that contains the system
controller, or provide a utility that can read an arbitrary chassis . i n i file
and generate the corresponding pxisys . i n i file. System controllers from
National Instruments provide the pxisys . i n i file for the PXI-101 1
chassis so that the user should not need to use the chassis . i n i file. Refer
to the documentation provided by the system controller for more
information on pxisys . i n i and chassis. i n i file.
Device drivers and other utility software read the pxisys . i n i (PXI
System Initialization) file to determine information about the system.
The device drivers should have no need to directly read the chassis . i n i
file. For detailed information regarding initialization files, please refer to
the PXI specification.
