Glossary
INCLINED PLANE
A geometric surface that is tilted with respect to another arbitrary
reference plane (for example, the Earth’s equatorial plane).
INITIALIZE
To enter constants into the navigator to enable it to start position-
ing and/or navigating accurately.
INTERFACE
Electronic circuits that permit the passage of data between differ-
ent types of devices; For example, the speed and heading interface
circuit permits data from a speed log and compass to pass to the
navigator processor.
IONOSPHERE
A layer of ionized air about 80 kilometers (50 miles) above the earth’s
surface.
IONOSPHERIC INTERFERENCE
Distortion imparted to a broadcast radio signal as it passes through
the ionosphere.
ITDMA
Incremental Time Division Multiple Access – Access protocol for
pre-announced transmissions of temporary or non-repeatable
character. It is also used during data link network entry.
ITU
International Telecommunication Union.
KALMAN FILTER
A software routine that produces the navigation solution (see NAVI-
GATION SOLUTION).
KEY LOCK
Disabling the
E
-key so that data entries cannot be inadvertently
made.
LED
Light Emitting Diode.
