Operator’s Manual
SIGNAL-TO-NOISE RATIO (S/N)
Quantitative relationship between the useful and non-useful part
of the received satellite signal. A high S/N indicates a good receiv-
ing condition.

SOFTWARE
Values programmed and preloaded into memory. The values repre-
sent a permanent set of instructions for running the automatic func-
tions (computations) of the navigator.
SOG
See SPEED OVER GROUND
SOTDMA
Self Organized Time Division Multiple Access – An access
protocol, which allows autonomous operation on a data link
while automatically resolving transmission conflicts.
SPACE SEGMENT
The orbiting satellite part of the Global Positioning System.
SPEED OVER GROUND
Speed in relation to the sea bed.
SPHEROID
See ELLIPSOID.
STEERING COMPASS
The compass used for navigation. It may be a direct-reading com-
pass from which the heading may be entered into the navigator via
the keyboard; or, it may be an electronic heading sensor that enters
heading data to the navigator via an optional interface.
TDMA
Time Division Multiple Access – An access scheme for multiple
access to the same data link.
