Chapter 4: Setup
Allocating Interrupts (Series 4xxx)
On the Series 4xxx, limited control of interrupt allocation is provided
through the BIOS Setup Utility. Due to the nature of the PCI bus, the
Plug and Play subsystem allocates the interrupts of PCI devices using
all available interrupts.
To free IRQ15, it is necessary to disable the secondary IDE bus. To do
this, in the Advanced menu, choose Primary in the Local BUS IDE
adapter selection.
To free IRQs 4, 3, or 7, in the I/O Device Configuration: selection, disable
COM A, COM B, or the Parallel port, respectively.
Note that to free IRQ 11, it is necessary to disable both COM C and
COM D, since they share that interrupt.
To finalize the freeing of interrupts and make unused interrupts
available for use by PCI devices, it is necessary to reset the
configuration data. This can be done in the Advanced menu.
To use ISA devices that require interrupts, it is necessary to reserve
those interrupts so that those interrupts are not allocated by the BIOS
to PCI devices. To do this, in the Advanced menu, choose Advanced
Chipset Control. Choose PCI/PNP ISA IRQ Resource Exclusion, then set
all ISA interrupts to Reserved.
Resolving COM 5 and COM 6 (Series 4xxx)
On the Series 4xxx, Windows 98 cannot automatically resolve the
shared interrupt resources of COM5 and COM6 (COM C and COM D
in BIOS setup) when installed. The following steps explain how to
manually correct this.
Note:
The Windows 98 feature provided with new units and the O/S
recovery CD for Windows 98 are set up correctly, and the following
steps are not necessary.
1.
From the Start button select Setting, Control Panel, System, and
then click the Device Manager tab.
2.
Double click on COM5 under Ports.
