Out-of-band Console Test Checklist
The following section provides general information to assist in troubleshooting the out-of-band
console.
Hardware Configuration
Verify that the hardware is set up correctly, as follows:
•
Verify that a phone cable connects the modem to a phone jack.
Note: If using the SMB internal modem, verify that the SMB actually has an internal
modem installed.
•
Verify that a cable connects the modem to the comm port.
Note: If using the SMB internal modem, verify that there is a cable connecting the SMB to
the comm port.
System Configuration
Verify that the system recognizes the modem, as follows:
•
Verify that the “NCR Remote Service” is not running. On NT, load control panel, click on
“Services”, and look for “NCR Remote Service”. This should be disabled, or at least stopped,
since it uses the comm port and makes it unavailable for other applications.
•
Verify that the comm port has correct default configuration parameters. On NT, load control
panel, click on “Ports”, and verify that the configuration is 8,N,1 with Hardware Flow
Control.
•
Verify the system can talk to the modem. Load the Terminal (HyperTerminal on Windows
NT 4.0) program and type AT<cr>. If the modem responds with OK, you know applications
can talk to the modem.
•
Verify the modem can dial out. Load the Terminal (HyperTerminal on Windows NT 4.0)
program and type ATDT(phone number of nearby phone)<cr>. If the modem dials out
correctly, you should hear the phone ring.
Arbiter Configuration
Verify that the arbiter is installed correctly, as follows:
•
Verify that tapi32.dll is correctly installed. If on Windows NT 4.0, verify that tapi32.dll does
NOT exist in the smm32 directory. If the Modem Device Name shows “COMn: (modem
name)”, it is the simulator. On Windows NT 4.0 with TAPI, the Device Name will be the
name of the Modem without a COMn: prefix.
Modem Configuration
Verify that the modem is configured correctly, as follows:
