NEC ShieldPRO FC-N21S Ruggedised Notebook Computer

User’s Guide 0318-00002 Ver. 2.0 Dec 2008 – Page 25

Some peripheral devices may only be recognised properly if their power is switched on before switching on
ShieldPRO.

Refer to the User Guides of peripheral devices for more information.

2.  Press the power switch of ShieldPRO.

After switching ShieldPRO on, it may take up to 10 seconds for the start-up screen to appear.

For details of the operation of the power lock release switch, see "6.5.1 Power Management

Configuration".

To avoid accidentally switching ShieldPRO off, the power switch must be pressed continuously for 1 to 2

seconds to power off.

If ShieldPRO is switched on when disconnected from the AC supply (i.e., operating on battery), it takes 1

to 2 seconds for the LEDs to illuminate after the power switch is pressed. This is because ShieldPRO is
designed to prevent battery power from being consumed by turning off standby power in the power-off
state. This does not occur in use of

WakeOnLAN

, since the standby power remains to sense LAN

signals.

Switching Off ShieldPRO

To switch ShieldPRO off, follow either of the procedures below.

Close all applications prior to powering down ShieldPRO. Before turning off the power, confirm that neither
the mouse pointer nor the hourglass appear and the file access LED does not illuminate.

Switching Off when in Windows

1.  Save edited data and exit all applications.

2.  For Windows XP, from the [Start menu], select [Shut Down], then select [Turn Off].

3.  ShieldPRO is automatically shut down by Windows. Do not press the power switch during

the shutdown process.

4.  Check that the power lights are all off, and then switch off the peripheral devices.

Power-off procedure using the power switch

1.  Save all documents, and exit all applications.

2.  Press the power switch (or power button plus power lock button).

Power lock release switch
