6-10 Communicating with Your NEC Versa
IR transfer speed ranges from 2.4 Kbit/sec to 4.0 Mbit/sec. You can choose the IR
transfer speed through the Infrared icon in the Windows control panel. Double click the
icon and select the options to access the speed parameter. Your NEC Versa transfers
data at the speed compatible with the receiving device.
Your NEC Versa ships with the IR port disabled. Before using
the IR port for the first time, you must enable the device. See detailed instructions in the
sections that follow.
Using the IR Port
Your NEC Versa ships with the IR port disabled. Before using the IR port for the first
time, you must enable the device. To enable your system’s IR device, you must:

First, enable the IR serial port in the system BIOS.

Second, enable the IR device in the operating system. The instructions for enabling
the IR port in Windows 2000 and Windows 98, vary. Be sure to follow the
instructions specific to your operating system, provided in the following sections.
Enabling the IR Serial Port in the System BIOS
Follow these instructions to enable the IR serial port in the system BIOS.
1.
Restart or power on your system and press
F2
(before the operating system loads)
to enter the BIOS setup.

Use the down arrow to highlight Peripheral Setup and press
Enter
.
3.
Use the down arrow to highlight IR Serial Port.
4.
Use the
PgDn
key to toggle the setting to Auto and press
Esc
.
5.
Press
F10
, select Yes, then press
Enter
to save your settings and exit the BIOS
setup.
Next, follow the instructions specific to your operating system to enable the IR
device.
Enabling the IR Port with Windows 2000
Follows these steps to enable the IR port in Windows 2000.

Go to Start, Setting, Control Panel, and double click the Wireless Link icon.

Select the Hardware tab and click the Properties button.
