slip. Position the spacers parallel and close to the fiber to be processed in order to
not use a lot of index-matching gel.
•
Using a syringe (not provided) filled with index-matching gel, apply the index-
matching gel on top of the fiber to be processed, making sure that it is contained
between the two spacers. Figure 20 illustrates this step.
•
Install the microscope cover-slip on top of the fiber to be processes. Start by
gently placing one end of the cover-slip first so that air has a place to escape while
slowly lowering the far side of the cover-slip. At the end of this step, a uniform
thin layer of index-matching gel should cover the fiber to be processes with no air
bubble mix in it as shown in Figure 21. A starter pack of microscope cover-slips
is provided with the system.
•
Set the sample on its original position by clicking “Go 0,0,0” in the Move screen.
•
Remove the spacer in the manual TS (Figure 6) and gently let the OL move back
to its original vertical position making sure that is not touching the microscope
cover-slip as shown in Figure 22. If more space is needed between the OL and the
microscope cover-slip, the micrometer in the TS can be used to coarsely changed
the vertical position of the OL.
