6. RADIO PLANNING GUIDE
As a rule of thumb, try to achieve a direct line of sight between the Niko dimmer switch and the EnOcean
®
receiver. If this is not possible, and there are one or more walls between the devices, the RF signal should penetrate
the wall(s) as straight as possible. We recommend using a mobile EnOcean
®
test device to determine the optimal indoor mounting position. When the radio coverage is not sufficient, try relocating the Niko dimmer switch or
use an EnOcean
®
RF repeater.

The maximum indoor RF range depends on:
• the materials used in the building or room or obstructions in the radio link path (see §6.1 below)
• the indoor position of the dimmer switch (see §6.2 below)
• sources of interference (see §6.3 below)
6.1. Materials and obstructions
Material
Range Reduction (versus a direct line of sight)
Wood, plaster, uncoated, without metal
5 – 20%
Brick, concrete without iron, chipboard
20 – 40%
Ferroconcrete, hollow lightweight walls filled with insulating wool on metal foil, metallic heating insulation
sheets, metallic surfaces, glass with a metal coating, floor heating systems, metal flush surround plates
40 – 90%
6.2. Position
Avoid installing the wireless dimmer switch:
• in a narrow room with thick walls
• on the same wall as a receiver
• close to the ground
• on a metal or moist surface or in a damp environment
• in so-called ‘dead spots’, caused by radio reflections from nearby conductive materials or large obstacles
6.3. Sources of interference
Respect a minimum distance between the devices listed below and the Niko dimmer switch.
Devices
Minimum distance
Magnets and ferromagnetic materials
6 cm
Low-power electronic devices (e.g. DECT telephones, smartphones, WLAN routers, analog radios, electronic
ballasts, controllers, TVs or computers)
50 cm
A high-power electronic device in a room can interfere with the radio telegrams of the Niko dimmer switch. Even with installations where the switch and the receiver are located within a direct line-of-sight or a range of fewer
than 30 m from one another. Identify the interfering source and remove it. When removal is not possible, consider relocating the Niko dimmer switch or using an EnOcean
®
RF repeater.
