gamma curves, found in the Gamma Curve Editor dialog. The factory default gamma
curves cannot be modified, while the custom curves can.
Where Gamma Curves Reside (Macintosh only)
The gamma curves reside in several locations. These include the factory default
gamma curves embedded in the plug-in’s preferences file, the default custom gamma
curves embedded in the plug-in’s preferences file, the custom gamma curves embedded
in the plug-in’s settings files, and the custom gamma curves stored on disk as gamma
files.
A data flow diagram is presented in Figure 16.4. The goal is to use the best
gamma curves available to the scanner for a particular image. As you can see, there are
several ways to load gamma curves into the scanner via the Nikon Scanner plug-in.

Sending Gamma Tables to the Scanner
The factory default gamma curves reside in the scanner, so it is not necessary to
send them to the scanner. Conversely, default custom gamma curves or gamma ‘tables’
must be sent to the scanner if they are to be utilized.
The important point to understand is that the gamma curves sent to the scanner
are the ones currently active in the Scan dialog. These might be the factory default
curves which are loaded into the Nikon Scanner plug-in at start-up, the default custom
