Network considerations
To implement a reliable Media Application Server (MAS) network
configuration, Nortel recommends that you deploy redundant servers or
blades. IM Chat is the only Media Application Server service that is limited
to one server for each service instance. Every other service can have two
servers assigned to it for redundancy. Carefully consider probable usage
patterns prior to the physical placement of Media Application Servers and
the allocation of services to domains.
Depending on the layout of the organization that the system serves, the
administrator decides whether to centralize all Media Application Server
based services, or to make some of them available in remote locations.
Capacity of WAN links and the amount of inter-office traffic are considered
when sizing the system and evaluating the cost of providing dedicated
MAS-based services at remote locations. Certain business considerations
dictate the need for dedicated servers for a segment of the user base.
Critical business functions should have systems with greater availability and
redundancy than non critical functions.
When a client-side firewall or Network Address Translation (NAT) is present
in the media traffic path of a MAS service, it must have specific IP and UDP
ports open, to enable successful signaling and media transmission. The IM
Chat service does not require an open UDP port range because the client
initiates the chat session, opening a pinhole in the firewall. All other Media
Application Server services listed in
Table 27 "UDP port ranges" (page 95)
must have the associated ports open on the firewall.
