Network considerations
IP requirements
This section outlines the IP requirements for the three Media Application
Server platforms:
•
"IP requirements for the IBM xSeries 336 and xSeries 335" (page 96)
•
"IP requirements for the IBM eServer BladeCenter or BladeCenter T"
(page 96)
IP requirements for the IBM xSeries 336 and xSeries 335
While there are two physical Ethernet links, only one static IP address is
required. The Ethernet links are configured for redundancy. This single IP
address is used for signaling, media, and OAMP. In addition, IP Addressing
should be static. DHCP for Media Application Server services is not
recommended.
IP requirements for the IBM eServer BladeCenter or BladeCenter T
For the recommended network setup, the following rules and guidelines
apply:
•
IP Addressing should be static. DHCP for Media Application Server
services is not recommended.
•
There must not be any NAT/NAPT present between the IBM eServer
BladeCenter and the Session Manager.
•
The IBM eServer BladeCenter or BladeCenter T management module
and Ethernet Switch Module Management IP Addresses must reside
on the same subnet.
•
The blade servers must reside on a different subnet from the IBM
eServer BladeCenter or BladeCenter T Management modules.
The rationale behind the preceding setup is that the IBM eServer
BladeCenter or BladeCenter T modules reside on a secure management
subnet, while the blade servers themselves reside on a normal traffic
network. That is, the management functions of the IBM eServer BladeCenter
or BladeCenter T must not be accessible from the normal network.
The following are the IP address requirements for the various modules and
blades. (DHCP is not used).
•
Each management module requires two IP addresses, one each for the
external and internal interfaces.
•
Each Ethernet switch module requires one IP address.
•
Each blade server requires one IP address.
Note: A dual-slot blade server, despite occupying two slots, still requires
only one IP address; the add-on blade is for storage only.
